The One GBP Setting That’s Making Your DPC Practice Invisible on Google

When a patient in your area searches “family doctor near me” or “direct primary care Grand Rapids,” Google decides in milliseconds who shows up in the map pack. Most DPC practices never appear — not because they’re new, not because they don’t have reviews, but because of a single dropdown field they filled out the day they set up their profile.

The wrong category is burying you.

Why “Medical Clinic” Sounds Right But Isn’t

When you created your Google Business Profile, you were probably asked to pick a business category. “Medical Clinic” feels accurate — it’s what you are, broadly speaking. So you picked it and moved on.

The problem: “Medical Clinic” is dominated by large health systems. Corewell Health. Trinity. Cherry Street. These organizations have hundreds of reviews, years of history, and a GBP managed by a dedicated marketing team. A solo DPC practice cannot compete in that bucket.

Google doesn’t know you’re a family physician. It only knows the category you told it.

The Category That Actually Works

The correct primary category for a DPC practice is Family Practice Physician.

This is the term Google maps to searches like:

  • “family doctor near me”
  • “primary care physician [city]”
  • “family medicine [city]”
  • “direct primary care [city]”

One practice I work with was set to Medical Clinic and was invisible for every one of those searches. After changing the primary category to Family Practice Physician, rankings moved within weeks — no ad spend, no new content, no backlink campaign.

“But I Was Getting Calls Before — Wasn’t It Working?”

Maybe occasionally. But here’s what was actually happening: patients who already knew your name were finding you. Anyone searching by service type — “family doctor near me,” “affordable primary care [city]” — wasn’t seeing you at all.

The wrong category doesn’t make you disappear completely. It just puts you in the wrong race. You weren’t invisible to people who were already looking for you specifically. You were invisible to everyone else.

How to Make the Change (2 Minutes)

  1. Go to business.google.com and sign in
  2. Click Edit Profile
  3. Under Business category, click your current primary category
  4. Type Family Practice Physician and select it — if it doesn’t appear exactly, try “Family Practice” and look for the physician variant in the dropdown
  5. Hit Save

That’s it.

Additional categories worth adding (in order of priority):

  • General Practitioner
  • Osteopath (if you’re a DO)
  • Doctor
  • Medical Clinic (as a secondary only — never primary)

Why This Works

Google uses your primary category as the strongest signal for what searches you’re relevant to. Secondary categories add breadth, but the primary drives your core ranking eligibility. “Family Practice Physician” is a narrower, more specific category — the big hospital systems aren’t optimizing for it the same way, which means the playing field levels out considerably for an independent practice.

You’ll also see this reflected quickly. Category changes are one of the fastest-moving GBP signals Google processes.
